Transcription: This bronze statue of Denis Chavez was a contribution from the state of New Mexico. Chavez was for four years a United States representative and then served as a United States Senator from 1935 to 1962. Chavez introduced the first bill to provide free textbooks in public schools. Chavez was also awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle by the Mexican government.
